Scientists in the United States say they have taken the first steps towards decoding brain waves and translating them into the actual words being thought by subjects.
Researchers at the University of California used implants to gather electrical signals directly from the superior temporal gyrus region of the brain.
This is the region of the brain that is involved in hearing and in helping us make linguistic sense of the sounds we hear.
These signals were then put through a computer model to translate the signals into actual words.
The BBC reports the research could be valuable in allowing people in a coma or those with locked-in syndrome - where the body is completely paralysed - to communicate.
