Child reported dead after Philippines quake

A child has died and a local tsunami alert was issued after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the Philippines island of Negros.

The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned residents along coastal areas to be on the alert for unusual waves as it issued a level 2 tsunami alert. No evacuation has yet been ordered.

The institute also warned structurally weak buildings may sustain damages

The main quake occurred at a depth of about 10 kms and was followed within a 30-minute period by two aftershocks of 4.8 and 5.6 magnitude.

Reuters news agency quotes the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre as saying that, based on all available data, a Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected
