8:06 am on 7 February 2012

Arctic conditions sweeping Europe have caused more deaths in Ukraine, Bulgaria and Poland.

In southern Bulgaria, five people drowned as torrential rains broke a dam wall and submerged a village beneath two and a half metres of icy water .

Overnight in Poland temperatures dropped to minus 30C.

Power supplies are becoming a problem in several countries.

A European Union official has denied there is an emergency as a result of a drop in Russian gas supplies to member states.

But in Italy - where 60,000 households are without power - the economic development minister has described the situation as critical.

The Tuscan towns of Arezzo and Siena have been without power for days.
