All staff to be replaced at school

10:01 am on 8 February 2012

The entire 120 staff of a primary school in Los Angeles will be replaced after two long-serving teachers were arrested for sexual abuse.

A completely new staff will start at Miramonte Elementary School on Thursday - accompanied by a social worker in each classroom.

They will continued to be paid and officials say many will eventually return to work.

More than quarter of the students stayed home on Monday. The school will remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The BBC reports both teachers had been at the school for many years.

Mark Berndt, 61, is accused of committing lewd acts with 23 children under the age of 10 between 2005 - 2010. Martin Springer, 49, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of fondling two female students.
