The party declared him the winner in Colorado, after he won the caucuses in Minnesota, as well as a non-binding primary in Missouri.

Mr Santorum had previously won only one of the first five Republican contests by a slim margin over Mitt Romney in Iowa.

Mr Santorum is a Catholic conservative who is presenting himself as a right wing alternative to the Republican frontrunner Mr Romney.

The presidential elections are in November.
