Singer Whitney Houston was found underwater and apparently unconscious when she was discovered in a Los Angeles hotel room bathtub, according to police.

The 48-year-old had been staying at the hotel in Beverly Hills ahead of the Grammy Awards and was found dead on Saturday.

In a statement released on Monday, police said they could not yet speculate on the cause of her death, although they have said foul play is not suspected.

They say Houston was pulled from the tub by members of her staff and hotel security was promptly notified, Reuters reports.

The coroner's office says it will wait for the results of toxicology tests before deciding whether prescription drugs were involved.

Her body has been flown from California to her home state of New Jersey, ahead of a funeral expected later this week.

Chart topping record

Houston holds the record for having the most consecutive chart-topping singles in the US, reaching number one seven times between 1985 and 1988, the BBC reports.

But her later career was overshadowed by substance abuse and her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

In recent years, drug use had taken its toll on the star and her voice - once acknowledged as one of the finest in pop music - was badly damaged.
