South Korea has held a military exercise involving live firing near its disputed sea border with North Korea, despite warnings from the north not to go ahead.
South Korean military officials describe the drill as routine, involving artillery, mortars and attack helicopters.
There has been no immediate response by North Korea.
The BBC reports that the two-hour exercise was conducted near an island that was hit by a North Korean artillery attack in 2010, killing four South Koreans.
North Korea had threatened to retaliate if the exercise went ahead, saying it was a premeditated military provocation.
The north also advised South Korean residents near the contentious border to evacuate.
