Japanese whaling ship attacked

6:28 am on 24 February 2012

The Institute of Cetacean Research says an anti-whaling group has attacked a Japanese whaling ship in the Antarctic Ocean by firing paint bombs at it and trying to jam its propeller with ropes.

The institute says Sea Shepherd members from the Steve Irwin, approached the Yushin Maru #3 on dinghies, before firing paint pellets, stink bombs and smoke flares.

The whalers responded with a water cannon.
