Fishing boat reaches cruise ship adrift in Indian Ocean

A fishing boat has reached the cruise ship adrift in the Indian Ocean with more than 1000 people on board.

The Costa Allegra, owned by the same company as the vessel that capsized off the Italian coast last month, is adrift southwest of the Seychelles following a fire on board.

The fire that broke out near the ship's generators has been put out but the vessel is without power.

The Italian coastguard says the 636 passengers and 413 crew are safe.

The ship has sent out a distress signal, and the Seychelles' maritime authority is sending help including power boats and aircraft.

The ship may have to be towed to the nearest port, more than 300 kilometres away in the Seychelles islands.

The ship is from the same fleet as the Costa Concordia which aground off the Italian island of Giglio on 13 January, killing 32 people.
