Red Cross not yet able to enter seige district

6:30 am on 3 March 2012

The International Committee of the Red Cross says it has been unable to enter the Baba Amro district of the Syrian city of Homs, where it had hoped to bring aid and evacuate the sick and wounded.

In a statement, the Red Cross said it is unacceptable that people who have been in need of emergency assistance for weeks, have still not received any help.

However, Red Cross personnel were staying in Homs in the hope of entering Baba Amr in the very near future.

Syrian authorities gave the organisation a "green light" on Thursday to enter the area.
