1 Human Instinct Pt 4: Coming Full Circle (duration: 23′14″)
In the final part of Instinct for Survival, Human Instinct head to Australia and end up loosing their lead guitarist. A succession of line-up changes, involving the hottest musicians around, results three more albums, including a symphonic rock masterpiece that was lost for 30-years. Then in 2008 Human Instinct; the unit that began as a 50s dance band morphed into a 60s beat band, played alongside the best of British and became underground rock heroes, were back. After nearly a decade in the studio the new album was finally out, revisiting some of the earlier classics and reminding punters of the unique guitar-driven sound, that kept Human Instinct one of the highest paid, hardest working bands of the late 60s and early 70s.

2 Human Instinct Pt 3: An Underground Edge (duration: 25′05″)
The Human Instinct, fresh from two years on the British pub and club circuit playing alongside many of the legends of rock history, were back on New Zealand soil in mid-1968. But their grunty equipment had been hijacked and soon drummer Maurice Greer was looking for a new line-up. With the arrival of guitarist Billy T.K and his experimental feedback and wah wah effects, Human Instinct began delivering a new kind sound and three outstanding albums that would be indelibly etched into Kiwi music history. 3 Human Instinct Part 2: Living the UK Dream (duration: 23′38″)
Short of cash and near starving, Human Instinct, the first Kiwi group on the highly competitive UK circuit, finally got their breakthrough. At first it was playing low paid pubs and support gigs but their willingness to give anything a go and deliver a harder edge sound soon saw them playing alongside Spencer Davis Group, Jeff Beck, 10-Years After, the Small Faces and other headlining acts of the era. With half a dozen singles recorded in London and critical acclaim they believed they were headed for the big time.

4 Human Instinct Part 1: Beyond the Four Four Beat (duration: 23′25″)
Stepping back 50-years in time The Four Fours had their beginnings as a humble sax-based dance band playing old time dance hits that shifted into Shadows-style instrumentals and beat band styles with the arrival of two guitarists. Soon with TV appearances and hit records, they were cleaning up on the Auckland club scene and after a gig supporting the Rolling Stones they were sailing off to try their luck alongside the big names on the British circuit under the new name, Human Instinct. 28 March 2008

5 Frizzell, Dick Musical Chairs (duration: 23′01″)
Over the years Dick Frizzell has been instrumental in broadening the Kiwi appreciation of art, with his unique take on realism, cubism and commercialism, challenging our perception of everyday things and what constitutes culture. From the mid-60s, fresh out of art school Frizzell was involved in the design and creation of dozens concert posters and album covers while he explored ways to define his role in the art world. Back in the day Frizzell shunned art for arts sake and was swept up in a heady mix of animation, advertising and pop art design. He designed posters for Radio Hauraki concerts and the Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival, created covers for local bands Human Instinct Ticket and Dragon and was called in to tone down David Bowie's Hunky Dory cover for record executives who thought he was too outrageous and the singer a one hit wonder. Frizzell messed with the hei tiki, delivering cubist and art deco versions and gave Charlie the Four Square man several decades of makeovers, most recently on the cover of the Great New Zealand Songbook, with a guitar slung over his shoulder. Reporter Keith Newman spoke to the artist, now living in Haumoana, Hawke's Bay, ranging across topics including art, culture, consumerism, and the rock 'n roll music that's provided the sound track for his life. 21 November 2009.
