One week. New Zealand’s top improvisers. Almost total chaos!

Every year hordes of improvisers take over BATS Theatre for one week of made-up mayhem; running workshops, masterclasses and a full programme of improv theatre fun. Across the week we present three or four one-off shows a night. There are no scripts, no lines to remember; only spontaneity and generosity on stage, creating theatre that has never been seen and will never be seen again.

Across  New Zealand Improv Festival 2016 every cast, crew, and production will come together in unique combinations, creating spontaneous comedy and theatre every single night.

As part of The RNZ/BATS 'Live On Stage. Now!' partnership, RNZ was there on opening night recording the first heat of the frightening Improdome challenge.

Improv

Live On Stage, Now! will make audio recordings of selected productions and events live on stage at BATS over the next 12 months. RNZ and BATS hope to make top-quality New Zealand stage works more available to audiences everywhere, within the theatre itself and beyond.

The partnership will mean greater opportunities for New Zealand artists, and a chance for more people to access fantastic new Kiwi theatre productions. Recorded productions will be played on air on RNZ once at the beginning of the on-stage season at BATS, and then will become available online on the RNZ website for a limited time after the stage run ends
