Passport to Hell

Passport to Hell Photo: Auckland University Press

Told by Catherine Wilkin

Adapted by Pat Sandbrook with Mary Paul.

Reissued in 2015 after more than seven decades, Passport to Hell is a visceral portrait of a true New Zealand anti-hero. James Stark ('Starkie')was in Mt Eden gaol when he first met Hyde.

The "queer, true, terrible story" of his life and experiences in World War I inspired a book about a man honoured for his courage. He was also a veteran of nine courts martial. Starkie was, like Hyde's book, unique.

Catherine Wilkin has worked extensively in theatre, film and television in NZ and Australia. TV roles include Cop Shop, Prisoner, Blue Heelers, McLeod’s Daughters and Outrageous Fortune
