New Hope - 5 refugee stories told and illustrated by the children of Island Bay School
The five stories in this special series were taken from the books published by the Make Foundation, a registered charity that uses music, technology and art projects to empower refugee communities displaced by Syria’s civil war.
The books in the series were illustrated by the children at Island Bay School in Wellington during a What is Home? art project run by the MAKE Foundation. Five of the children were chosen to read the stories which were recorded in the school library by RNZ producer Lynda Chanwai-Earle.
Lynda is producer of RNZ's Voices - a documentary programme/podcast featuring stories from ethnic communities across New Zealand.
The song used in the series is Just Want Home. It was written by Naia Alkhouri when she was just 10 years old. She wrote it for her grandmother who was still trapped in Aleppo.
