Patrick Gale was born on Britain's Isle of Wight, the son and grandson of prison wardens. He has never had a 'proper' job but instead has written 15 novels, all known for their acuity, heart and soul. He visited Wellington for the first time in March to talk about his novel “A Place Called Winter” with Victoria University English Professor Jane Stafford in front of a live audience. The novel explores forbidden love, lives and the disappeared. Based on a mystery in his family's past.
