The work was premièred with Tchaikovsky on the podium in October of 1893 just nine days before his mysterious death. The Russian title 'Pateticheskaya' means "passionate" or "emotional", implying a state of suffering.  In this symphony, unlike the 4th, the symbolic struggle against fate is lost, tempting many to think of it as a kind of self-written Requiem.
