In 1913 Ottorino Respighi moved to Rome as a composition professor where the Fountains of Rome launched his success as a composer. Respighi’s orchestral showpieces, buoyed by Rome’s active instrumental music scene have captivated audiences ever since, with their kaleidoscopic colours.
The Pines of Rome (1924) is the middle episode of a triptych of tone poems that paint various portraits of the Italian capital; it follows Fountains of Rome (1916) and precedes Roman Festivals (1929).
