Antonin Dvořák’s so-called ‘American Quartet’ dates from 1893 and is one of two notable works from the three years he spent in the United States – the other being of course the ‘New World’ Symphony.  But his time in America was tinged with homesickness and although he uses some American folk tunes, the overwhelming sentiment of this four movement work is Dvořák’s nostalgia for his native land.
