Written in 1967, 'Head On' is – as Charlotte Wilson writes in her programme note – “the first Philip Glass piece that sounds like Philip Glass”.

It didn’t get its first public performance until 2017 though. He wrote it for a party and friends.

“It was really obsessive music,” Glass says, “which began with the players playing different melodies. With each development of the piece, the differences started to become eliminated, so that by the time we came to the end, everyone was playing together. At the very end, there was a collision of all this music – that’s why it was called Head On.”

Recorded at NZTrio's concert 'Weave' in the Loft at Q Theatre, 26 September 2018.
