BBC Proms 2018 - Week Eight

From Music Alive, 6:00 am on 24 September 2018

It’s the last week of the Proms here on RNZ Concert and as well as the bawdy often raucous fun of the Last Night of the Proms in Music Alive on Wednesday, you can look forward to some tango on Tuesday night.

Tango Prom at Royal Albert Hall

The Britten Sinfonia join forces with a tango band to celebrate the raw sensuality of the dance from its dusty beginning in the streets of Buenos Aires right up to the present day and hear tangos from Latin America to Finland.

Showcasing Grammy Award-winning pianist Pablo Ziegler along with leading singers, dancers and instrumentalists from Europe, the USA and Argentina, the raw and earthy vitality of the tango is explored, from the sultry intimacy of the bandoneon to the big-band orchestral forces of the Britten Sinfonia.

On Wednesday night, Canadian baritone Gerald Finley takes the stage with rising star saxophonist Jess Gillam at the centre of the iconic Last Night of the Proms

Jess Gillam brings the house down with her performance of Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud.

Also on stage are the BBC Singers and the BBC Symphony Chorus & Orchestra and its all conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.

Listeners won’t be disappointed with the programme which features all the classics you’d expect from The Last Night of the Proms.

In the second half they'll do Sir Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 1, Parry's Jeruasalem and, of course, Thomas Arne’s Rule Brittania!
