In celebration of Norwegian jazz singer Karin Krog's 80th birthday, William Dart profiles an artist he calls a long-time favourite.
She has a repertoire that runs from John Coltrane to John Cage; she sings scat in the same league as Ella Fitzgerald and Annie Ross, but also has a winningly direct, matter-of-fact way with a sentimental ballad.
Many of the tracks in this special hour-long edition of New Horizons come from the recently released 6-CD box set The Many Faces of Karin Krog, but William supplements this with a few of his own choices from her 53-year career including a couple of tracks from the extraordinary 1980 album, With Malice Toward None, on which she performs songs of a spiritual nature accompanied by Nils Lindberg on the organ of Gagnef Church in Sweden.
