New Year’s Day

Settling the score

For New Zealand’s thirteenth annual survey of the country’s best loved classical music our annual countdown was brought forward from New Year's Day to November. We built up to a live event, when the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and host John Campbell took to the stage of the Auckland Town Hall to perform ten of the most popular works in Settling the Score – Live.

Radio New Zealand Concert Manager, Roger Smith says this year’s listener response yielded “a fresh insight into the music audiences love most”.  “There’s certainly overwhelming interest in orchestral music, which is great news for our country’s orchestras!”

All day we counted down most of your favourite 65 orchestral works. Beginning with Sibelius's Karelia Suite at 8am and reaching John Psathas's Omnifenix just before 8pm, we traversed nearly four centuries' worth of music.

Then at 8pm, we crossed to Auckland for Settling the Score Live. Led by their Music Director Eckehard Stier, the APO played ten of your most beloved orchestral movements, drawing upon their own players as soloists.

We replayed the whole countdown on New Year's Day 2013.
