Composer John Young brings Spirit to CSO

From Upbeat, 1:45 pm on 20 February 2018

Electroacoustic composer John Young has written a fanfare to open the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 60th birthday season this Saturday.

His work is called Spirit and includes his recording of a bell in the town of Forli in Italy, where his father Alex was stationed during 1944 … a special place in family memory because that’s where Alex met his future wife Cecilia.

Forli was heavily bombed in 1944 and some of Cecilia’s family were killed; the Cathedral that housed the bell was hit but somehow the bell tower survived.

Eva Radich spoke with John about how his work also honours the spirit of those who die in War.
