City Gallery Wellington has re-opened for 2018 with a new exhibition entitled This is New Zealand.
It explores art’s role in establishing and questioning notions of national identity, taking a critical look at how we portray ourselves, and the stories we tell others about ourselves.
It includes three installations that were displayed at various Venice Biennale, and many other works that have been associated with World Fairs, Expos, and diplomatic contexts.
But can you have an exhibition on national identity without Colin McCahon or Gordon Walters? Upbeat talks with City Gallery Wellington’s Chief Curator Robert Leonard.
