It's International Piano Day on 29 March. A day dedicated to the centuries-old joy of playing piano. Piano Day is for all kinds of piano lovers — young and old, amateur and professional, of any musical direction – as well as those thinking of taking it up as an instrument.

Girls at the Piano, a memoir by Virginia Lloyd, takes us through her own life with the piano. At one time Lloyd thought she would have a career as a concert pianist. When that didn't happen, she began to question all those years of study: had they been wasted?

Girls at the Piano takes us from the salons of 18th-century Europe to an amateur jazz workshop in Manhattan in the early 21st century as one woman explores her enduring relationship with this enduring instrument.

While titled Girls at the Piano, this book is for everyone who loves the piano and the sound it makes.

To celebrate Piano Day, we're giving away a copy of the book. Listen to Upbeat (12pm - 2pm) this week to find out more.

Our thanks to Anna Hunt at Marsden Books for her inspired book suggestions.
