John Drummond looks at ten crucial times in Mozart's life

    (10) Mozart's finest hour (June - September 1791)

Between Ave verum corpus in June 1791 and the première of Die Zauberflöte in September, Mozart's musical style moved into a new world of subtlety and humanity. Its qualities are hinted at in many earlier works, but now a new level is reached, despite the extraordinary stresses in his life - Constanze's ill-health, the urgent commission for La clemenza di Tito, and the Requiem commission. These stresses would lead to his death at the end of the year, but for a moment Mozart rises to his greatest achievements (RNZ)

    Miró's Music

"My work is intended as a poem translated into music by a painter"

Catalan painter Joan Miró has influenced more than a few composers. Introducing his Miró inspired album Time Further Out, Dave Brubeck said "I feel that in Miró's painting he has expressed in visual terms my own approach to music - that is, a search for something new within old forms, an unexpected perspective, a surprising order and inner balance that belies the spontaneity of composition"

Julie Sperring looks at a variety of music inspired by Miró's works, from Previte to Poulenc, Brubeck to Takemitsu (RNZ)
