American Samoa to have cheaper phone calls to US

11:16 am on 10 January 2003

American Samoa is one step closer to joining the North American telephone numbering plan which would lower the costs of calls to the US mainland.

The Federal Communications Commission has notified the Director of the North America Numbering Plan, or NANP, that American Samoa should be able to join.

American Samoa is currently the only US territory in the Pacific not included in the NANP, which means calls from the US to the territory are treated as international calls.
