Samoan MP accuses government of inaction over dump concerns

4:58 pm on 16 January 2003

An independent member of the Samoan parliament has accused the government of failing to address problems with a rubbish dump close to schools.

Leanapapa Laki says the government has done nothing about the dump at Vaiaata although the prime minister had told parliament that things would be improved.

The MP says the dump, which is close to Vaiola College and Logoipolotu College, is still being used.

The prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, said he visited the dump and disputed that it was close to the schools.

While Leanapapa has reportedly discussed with villagers the possibility of closing the access road, Tuilaepa has said this would be outside the law.
