Petroleum and Gas Secretary wants out of his job

3:40 pm on 27 January 2003

Papua New Guinea's Secretary for the Petroleum and Gas Department says he has had enough of dealing with landowners from resources rich provinces and wants out.

Joseph Gabut says dealing with landowners is a nightmare and that he has asked the Prime Minister to remove him.

Mr Gabut says he has the worst job anybody can do and that the country does not understands what he does.

He says that over the last six months he had wanted to get out of the job as Petroleum and Gas Secretary.

Mr Gabut's comments come after the Public Accounts Committee threatened to sack him because of his failure to appear to a Thursday hearing.

He told the PAC that he was attending to threats by Kutubu landowners to shut down the gas fields in the Southern Highlands.
