Samoa Water Authority says village has blockaded new water treatment plant

A senior manager from Samoa's Water Authority is meeting chiefs of Vailoa at Palauli village to find out why villagers have blocked the road to a new water treatment plant opened late last year.

The 19 million US dollar plant, which was funded by the European Union, supplies treated water to a large section of the eastern coast of Savai'i Island.

The project was heralded as an example of co-operation between villages and government but reports say the Vailoa villagers are unhappy with the lease agreement signed with the government.

The Water Authority says it doesn't understand why the villagers are upset as all aspects of the lease had been dealt with.
