Niue's parliament has elected Young Vivian as the country's new leader.

Mr Vivian has been the deputy premier since 1992 and last week he was chosen as the leader of the Niue People's Party to replace Sani Lakatani.

Mr Vivian beat the challenger, Hunukitama Hunuki, by 14 to six votes.

Premier Vivian says he was successful, because his party has fulfilled its promises to the people.

"We have promised the people a number of things, in fact eighteen things to be exact, and we have produced the goods. We have done those things we promised the people."
