A coalition partner in Solomon Islands government says the good name of Taiwan must be protected during the current controversy over the dumping of waste in Makira Province.

Under the scheme, millions of tonnes of toxic waste would be shipped to Makira in return for payments amounting to many millions of dollars.

The People's Alliance Party held an extra ordinary meeting over the weekend at which it was agreed to do everything possible to protect the image of Taiwan, which is the country's major donor.

The party said while the public administration and the government might not share the same views about the waste, the good name of Taiwan must be protected.
