Some Makira people re-affirm plan to import waste from Taiwan to Solomons

Some people in Solomon Islands' Makira Province are determined to pursue their plan to import Taiwanese industrial waste despite protests from hoem and abroad.

The traditional chief from the Makira weathercoast, where the Haura Development Company plans to dump the waste, James Morea, says they plan to import humus waste and not industrial waste.

Tests of the waste done in Taiwan show it to be toxic and of a kind that may not be shipped to Pacific Island countries legally.

Mr Morea has described as an insult an open forum in Honiara that discussed the waste issue.

He says his people don't like the forum because it is biased and it consists of mainly critics who are out to destroy the Haura people.
