MPs in the Indonesian province of Papua have held a special session to discuss demands made by independence activists who protested in Jayapura last week.

The Papuan human rights organisation Elsham says the session considered three issues.

John Rumbiak of Elsham says these are a call for parliament to come up with a legal system that protects people's rights in the face of the strong security presence in the province.

As well, the protestors asked for a credible and independent inquiry into last November's murder of the separatist leader Theys Eluay.

The session also considered a call that the provincial parliament propose to Jakarta that it resolve the political status of Papua in a peaceful and democratic way.
