There has been increased lawlessness in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, as the country is in the last week of the latest gun amnesty.

Those in illegal possession of guns and stolen property have until Friday to return them to qualify for the amnesty.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"Masked armed men have looted the home of a Red Cross staff member after harassing children at the house. There has also been an assault on the partner of a law firm who was asked to surrender a company vehicle."

Gunmen are reportedly intimidating those advocating the surrender of weapons on a broad scale. And the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation has been threatened reportedly by gunmen of the Police Field Force which played a key role in coup two years ago. The attack on the radio station came after it reported that at last Friday's police parade to collect stolen guns some refused to give them up.
