Fiji prime minister and Labour Party leader agree to weekend talks

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, have agreed to discuss a muti-party cabinet.

This was confirmed by Mr Qarase after he invited Mr Chaudhry to a one-to-one meeting in Suva yesterday.

Mr Qarase said they have also agreed to discuss land lease issues and a review of the 1997 Constitution.

The talks will take place at this weekend's informal discussikns arranged at a Coral Coast hotel by the director of the Hawaii-based East West Centre, Dr Sitiveni Halapua.

Yesterday's meeting was the first such contact between the two political rivals whose public disagreements have left the country bitterly divided.

Mr Qarase described yesterday's meeting as short but very cordial

He says they will try to find a way forward for Fiji by finding common ground.
