8:39 am on 10 June 2002

An American research team from Brown University has so far collected more than 570 DNA samples from American Samoa residents as part of a study into obesity.

An earlier study by the same team focussed on obesity patterns among Samoan people.

The current study introduces DNA to see if there is a genetic basis for obesity among Samoans and aims to involve 600 adults and the same number of children.
