Dissident members of Fiji's SVT Party to form new political party

5:24 am on 13 June 2002

Dissident members of the Fijian Political party, the SVT, are reported to be behind moves to form a new political party.

Radio Fiji reports the new party will be known as the Fiji Democratic Party but is yet to be registered.

The radio says a former senior cabinet minister is the driving force behind the new party.

It says the birth of the Fiji Democratic Party is the result of the dismal performance of the SVT in the last general election when the ruling party of the 1990s failed to win a single seat.

As well, many SVT party supporters defected to the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase's ruling SDL party.

The former SVT leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, has disassocited himself from the new party saying he knows nothing about it and is not in any way involved.

Mr Rabuka was reacting to claims that he was one of those behind the new party.
