A man and his wife are due to appear in court in Samoa next week accused of lying to police after the man claimed to have been shot.

Police said the man, Uimaitua Namulauulu, claimed to have been hit by a bullet in his leg while he and his wife were at the Apia waterfront eating fish.

But during questioning by police, the couple admitted that the incident was a hoax.

Last week, officers had gone on television asking for the public's help to track down the offender.
