The International Peace Monitoring team in Solomon Islands has begun disposing of illegal weapons surrendered to them under the terms of the Townsville Peace Agreement.

The Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, says around two thousand illegal weapons will be permanently disposed.

The Solomon Island Broadcasting Corporation quoted Sir Allan as saying the move was another step forward in the peace process and a cause of great rejoicing.

The Explosives Ordinance Division of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force is currently destroying explosives surrendered to the Peace Monitoring Team.

All ammunition surrendered during the last 18 months has also been disposed of.
