The chair of Fiji's Electoral Commission says she would be concerned if the police investigation into alleged vote buying by ministers take a long time.

Vasantika Patel says she understands that a thorough investigation does take time especially when the police have scarce resources.

But, she says too long would be concerning although there are other options for pursuing the allegations.

"A petition can be brought in the court of disputed returns to question wether those allegedly responsible have been validly elected under Section 73 of our constitution. There is no time limit if corrupt practice is alleged. The petition may be brought and this can be done by a voter in the election concerned, or by a candidate, or by the attorney general."

No petition has been lodged into the alleged vote buying by ministers.
