Fiji government warns against protests or demonstrations during ACP summit

11:13 am on 28 June 2002

Civil society organisations and trade unions in Fiji have been warned not to stage demonstrations or protests at the summit of African, Caribbean and Pacific leaders to be held in Nadi next month.

The Daily Post says the warning has been issued by the special envoy to the prime minister for the ACP summit, Berenado Vunibobo

Mr Vunibobo says the ACP meeting is not the venue to express anger and disagreements or dislike of the government.

He says the meeting is a critical one for Fiji in terms of negotiating preferential prices for sugar exports to the European Union and trade agreements on garments and tuna.

Mr Vunibobo says activities such as demonstratiuons and protests would not help and would be a setback.

His warnings follow statements by several trade unions and civil society organisations that they would seek to highlight their grievances during the summit.

Its been reported in Fiji that the presidents of Zimbabwe and Kenya, Robert Mugabe and Daniel Arap Moi, as well as the King of Swaziland will attend the summit.
