A Samoan couple from New Zealand have been fined 300 US dollars by the District Court of Samoa, after being found guilty of making false statements to the police.

Sila Uimaitua Namuali'i and his wife Leone were on holiday in Samoa when he told police he had been shot in the leg by an unknown assailant.

However police discovered that Sila had accidently shot himself at the home of his wife's relatives in Palisi.

The couple told police that they lied about the shooting because the gun used had been banned in the country and belonged to Mrs Namualii's father.

The couple were ordered to the pay the fine or spend three months in jail.
