Confidence grows that Fiji airline employees strike will be averted

9:30 am on 13 July 2002

Hopes are high in Fiji that a strike by employees of the national airline, Air Pacific, which was suspended early yesterday will be averted altogether.

Talks will take place in Nadi today between the Fiji Aviation Workers Association and Air Pacific.

The association's secretary, Attar Singh, says he is hopeful that a resolution will be reached this weekend after which they will meet government ministers to finalise the agreement.

The labour minister, Kenneth Zinck, says he has every confidence that an acceptable solution will be reached.

Air Pacific employees suspended their work to rule and overtime ban at dawn yesterday after all night talks.

But some employees are reported to be angry that full strike action had not been taken right from the beginning.
