Solomon Islands public employees renew strike threat

10:39 am on 18 July 2002

Public sector workers in Solomon Islands have threatened further strike action after the Prime Minister cancelled talks called to discuss their concerns over not being paid on time.

The workers are demanding that the Government treat the wages issue as a priority.

The secretary of the Solomon Islands Public Employees Union, Clement Waiwori, says they were advised on Tuesday that the Prime Minister, Sir Allen Kemakeza had urgent business to deal with and the meeting had been cancelled

Mr Waiwori says he is trying to reschedule the meeting.

"The mebers are very angry with the situation now because they are back to square one. They were pressurising the union executive to immediately take action. My advice was that any action, which we have already given notice of, will only be taken after we talk to the prime minister early next week."
