PNG Electoral Commissioner to seek court ruling on fresh poll for Enga and Southern Highlands

10:21 am on 18 July 2002

The country's Electoral Commissioner says he's considering going to court to determine whether a fresh poll should be held for violence hit Enga and Southern Provinces.

Reuben Kaiulo said earlier this week that he could not consider fresh elections untill the regions were stable and peaceful.

He also said he could not act until he had heard from his officials in the regions affected.

However he now says he might need to go to court, because there is no clear cut law that allows him to call fresh elections.

And Mr Kaiulo confirmed that the Commission is undertaking an audit to determine how many ballot boxes and papers have been destroyed in the Highlands.
