11:03 am on 19 July 2002

A reconciliation ceremony will be held in Solomon Islands today for former militants, chiefs and national leaders from Guadalcanal and Malaita whose people were involved in the ethnic conflict.

The opening address will be given by the minister of national unity, reconciliation and peace, Nathaniel Waena.

Mr Waena says the process is also hoped to lead to the reopening of the major projects on Guadalcanal.

"To allow people concerned to come to terms with the situation and to reconcile their differences so that we could re-open the SIPL operations and the Gold Ridge mine. These things are going to be milestones in our own efforts to resolve our own internal problems."
