The House Speaker in The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas says he is still intending to introduce a controversial measure that aims to increase user fees by an additional 1-POINT-3 percent despite opposition by some members.
Heinz Hofschneider says he will introduce the measure and then see how the chips will fall.
It's expected that representatives of garment manufacturers, who have expressed their opposition to the tariff, will attend the parliamentary session.
The garment industry has saved money in the past, because of the CNMI's tariff exemptions, but Mr Hofschneider's measure would change that.
The Saipan Tribune reported that Mr HofSchneider had offered to resign from his post because of the mounting oppostion to his cause.
