Tight deadline for Bougainville Constitution Commission

4:51 pm on 25 July 2002

The administrator of the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville says a commission established to draft the island's constitution will have until October to do so.

Simon Pentanu says the Bougainville Constitution Commission's 24 members must hold widespread public consultations and present a draft constitution for debate by a constituent assembly by the end of October.

The Bougainville Governor, John Momis, announced the establishment of the BCC last week and appointments of its members are yet to be made.

Mr Pentanu says it is seeking more than 380-thousand US dollars from international aid donors and the PNG government to fund the BCC.

He says the goal is for Bougainville to have a constitution by March next year.

"We have instructions from the leadership to have the commission come back with a draft report at the end of October. We are also looking at the constitution assembly seat to consider what option the draft constitution at the earliest by the end of March and the latest by the 30th June"

Simon Pentanu says the weapons disposal programme is on track with ex-combatants handing in weapons ready for containment under United Nations guidelines.
