12:29 pm on 29 July 2002

Security for Pacific leaders attending the Forum summit in Suva next month has been thrown in doubt as Fiji police have run out of funds.

Police have withdrawn security in parliament causing fear in the minds of MPs many of whom were taken hostage in the coup only two years ago.

The Labour Party has called for the removal of the police commissioner, Colonel Isikia Savua, branding his action as irresponsible.

The speaker of the House, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, told parliament the matter was of great concern.

Police have also withdrawn security from Nadi airport.

Senior officers said they had applied to the government for more funds but they were not provided.
